How about trying one of the best vegetarian hamburgers ever? Then go to a little welcoming place in Lisbon, called Alaska! It’s in Rua da Rosa, in Bairro Alto, and you can also order Hidromel to go with your burger (which is made from fermented honey). After a whole day of taking in different sights in this charming city, it provides a cool place for a break.
Well, let’s start from the beginning of this beautiful holiday. This was one of those occasions when the holiday wasn’t very well planned, but made up from a decision to take things as they come along and improvise. So, the places visited were Carcavelos, Sintra, Estoril, Cascais, and Lisbon.
Praia de Carcavelos, the beach where there are not only surf schools, but a nice boardwalk for romantic strolls in the sunset or early morning workouts, where one can find several good restaurants/bars (one of which serves excellent sushi), and where the waves are exciting (though not for the faint-hearted).
Carcavelos turned out to be the perfect base for sightseeing as well. It’s easy to hop on one of the trains or buses running along the coast. One day was spent in Sintra, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where one can find several romantic and architecturally interesting buildings. Pena Palace is a fairytale-like castle.
A lot can be said about Estoril and Cascais, the twin towns on the coast west of Lisbon, but they are certainly picturesque and worth a visit. Why not just sit down at one of the cafés and enjoy an ice cream while listening to some fado music being played in the square.
Finally, Lisbon. What a beautiful, vibrant city! It feels like it really doesn’t matter where you go, because every block has its own charm. Not to be missed, though, is an evening spent in a restaurant in Alfama where they play fado music live. It truly is like stepping right into a scene of Lady & the Tramp. The preferred hotel this time was the Hotel Olissippo Castelo, worth mentioning because of the friendly staff, the good location, and not the least, the room with the perfect view from our very own terrace.
